Prepping Your Skin For Bronzed Perfection
Updated: Aug 26
Okay, ladies, you've all heard me say it. You enter my spray tan studio, we catch up, and I ask the age-old question, "Have you prepped your skin?"
The reality is, I can use my top-of-the-line product which should never leave you orange and apply it perfectly even, but if you don't put in the work to prep your skin, I can't promise you that your tan will be flawless like you deserve it to be. This relationship has to be a two-way street. Do your part in preparation before you come to the studio, and I'll give you a flawless delivery every time.
Here are my top tips and tricks to help you prep your skin to ensure flawless color and delivery, because that's what you deserve.
1. Take a warm shower or bath.
Use this time to shave. Make sure to use a razor that does NOT have a moisture strip! I personally use the BIC Flex 5 razor (side note - why are men's razors always better?!), but anything without a moisture strip is great. It's best to shower and shave several hours before your appointment.
2. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate.
Did you catch that?! Exfoliate your skin! This step is crucial because it removes dead skin cells so that fresh skin is at the forefront, which means your tan will be absorbed evenly and fully. Make sure you exfoliate at least four hours before your appointment.
3. Use non-moisturizing products.
There are tons of products on the market right now with pretty packaging, but that leave a residue on your skin after you use them (looking at you, Dove soap!). The left-behind residue causes the solution to not adhere to your skin as well which leads to a streaky tan. This is also the reason why you shouldn't have on any deodorant, lotion, makeup, or perfume when you come to your appointment.
To help you out, I have created a custom Sunkissed by Bethany line of tanning products. These can be purchased in the studio. There are two custom scents in The Lotion and The Scrub, plus The Face Drops and The Tanning Lotion for an at-home self-tan.
If there's anything I can do to help you prepare for your spray tan, I want to know, so please ask questions! I hope these tips help you prep your skin with care so you can come to my studio with confidence that we can make your tan come out perfectly sunkissed.
